Our client is seeking a General Supervisor who will be responsible for supervising day-to-day production activities within the steel service centre, ensuring efficient operations, quality output, and compliance with health and safety standards. Experience with Hi-Def plasma cutting, laser cutting, and bending operations will be highly beneficial to ensure smooth workflow and technical support on the shop floor.

Key Responsibilities

Production & Operations

• Supervise daily production activities across cutting and bending departments.
• Ensure production targets and delivery deadlines are achieved.
• Monitor machine utilisation, workflow, and labour productivity.
• Address production challenges and minimise downtime and scrap.

Technical Supervision

Oversee correct setup and operation of:

• Hi-Def plasma cutting machines
• Laser cutting machines
• Press brakes / bending machines
• Interpret drawings, job cards, and specifications accurately.
• Assist operators with troubleshooting and process improvements.
• Liaise with maintenance regarding machine breakdowns and preventative maintenance.

Quality Control

• Ensure all processed material meets quality and tolerance requirements.
• Conduct in-process inspections and identify non-conformances.
• Implement corrective actions where required.

Health & Safety

• Enforce compliance with the OHS Act and company safety procedures.
• Conduct toolbox talks and safety inspections.
• Ensure PPE is worn and machines are always operated safely.

People Management

• Supervise, motivate, and discipline shop-floor staff.
• Manage attendance, shift handovers, and daily task allocation.
• Assist with training and skills development of operators.
• Promote teamwork, accountability, and a positive work culture.

Administration & Reporting

• Complete daily production and shift reports.
• Record downtime, scrap, and rework.
• Communicate production performance and issues to management.

 Minimum Requirements

Qualifications

• Grade 12 (Matric) – essential
• Trade qualification (Boilermaker, Fitter & Turner, or similar) – advantageous

Experience

• Minimum 5 years’ experience in a steel service centre or steel processing environment
• 2–3 years’ supervisory experience
• Practical exposure to:
• Hi-Def plasma cutting
• Laser cutting
• Bending / press brake operations (beneficial)

Technical Skills

• Ability to read and understand engineering drawings
• Knowledge of steel grades, tolerances, and processing requirements
• Basic production planning and reporting
• Computer literacy (ERP systems, Excel – basic)

Salary Range: Market related

Location: Germiston

Start Date: Immediate

Working Hours: (Dayshift) 06:00- 16:00 Monday- Thursday 06:00- 14:00 Friday
