Job Summary:

The Zünd Cutter Operator is responsible for setting up, operating, and maintaining the Zünd digital cutting system to produce high-quality finished materials according to job specifications. This includes cutting, routing, creasing, and finishing printed or raw materials such as cardboard, vinyl, foam board, plastics, textiles, and other substrates.

Reports To: Production Manager / Finishing Supervisor

Key Responsibilities:

Machine Setup & Operation

• Prepare and operate Zünd digital cutting equipment in accordance with production requirements.
• Load and align materials correctly for accurate cutting.
• Set up cutting parameters including tools, blades, routing bits, and cutting depth.
• Interpret job tickets, production layouts, and CAD or print files.

Quality Control

• Inspect materials for defects before and after cutting.
• Ensure all cuts meet design specifications and tolerances.
• Verify color registration and print alignment when working with printed sheets.

File & Software Management

• Import and adjust cutting files from software such as Adobe Illustrator, CorelDRAW, or Zünd Cut Center (ZCC).
• Optimize nesting and cutting paths for material efficiency.
• Maintenance & Safety
• Perform routine maintenance on the Zünd cutter and related tools.
• Ensure the working area and equipment are clean, organized, and safe.
• Report any mechanical or technical issues to maintenance or supervisors immediately.

Collaboration & Workflow

• Coordinate with print operators, designers, and production staff to ensure timely job completion.
• Maintain accurate job records and update production logs.
• Assist with other finishing tasks when required (mounting, laminating, packing, etc.).

Skills & Competencies:

• Strong technical knowledge of Zünd digital cutting systems (G3, S3, or similar).
• Ability to read and interpret CAD drawings and production layouts.
• Excellent attention to detail and precision.
• Good problem-solving and troubleshooting abilities.
• Basic computer literacy (Zünd Cut Center, Adobe Suite, RIP software).
• Understanding of safety and quality control procedures.
• Team player with good communication skills.

Qualifications & Experience:

• Matric / Grade 12 or equivalent.
• Minimum 1–2 years’ experience operating a Zünd or similar digital cutter (e.g., Kongsberg).
• Experience in the printing, signage, packaging, or manufacturing sector preferred.

Working Conditions:

• Factory or production floor environment.
• Requires standing for extended periods and handling large or heavy materials.
• May involve overtime or shift work depending on production demands.
