Job Description:
Our client, a leading mining company, is seeking a Sustainability Manager to lead and manage all Safety, Health, Hygiene, Environment, Fire, Medical Emergencies, and sustainability-related functions at their plant in Limpopo. The role ensures operational compliance with legal and corporate sustainability requirements across mining, grey areas, road, and rail operations. This position drives a proactive safety culture, strengthens environmental stewardship, and aligns business practices with sustainability best standards.
Responsibilities:
- Lead and oversee all Sustainability, Safety, Health, and Environmental (SHE) operations for the Business Unit (BU) and associated areas.
- Collaborate with senior leadership to set sustainability strategies, goals, and operational discipline in line with business objectives.
- Implement, integrate, and monitor sustainability policies, management plans, and standards.
- Drive SHE culture transformation, promoting proactive behaviours at all levels.
- Manage SHE-related risk assessments, mitigation plans, and incident investigations.
- Ensure accurate and timely reporting of sustainability data, KPIs, and legal compliance submissions.
- Oversee SHE compliance audits, inspections, and governance requirements, including Mining Charter and BBBEE reporting.
- Engage with internal and external stakeholders including communities, regulators, and business partners on sustainability matters.
- Build, coach, and develop a high-performing sustainability team.
- Ensure operational readiness for emergencies and medical response.
- Lead mine rehabilitation, closure planning, and environmental trust fund compliance.
- Identify and implement industry best practices and innovative solutions to improve SHE performance.
- Standardise and streamline SHE processes across the BU.
- Manage SHE budgets, forecasting, and resource allocation.
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives and embed a culture of accountability and safety.
Requirements: Qualification and Skill
- Bachelor’s Degree (Honours) in a relevant field is essential.
- Management Development Programme is essential.
- A minimum of 10+ years’ experience managing Safety, Health, and Environmental operations.
- 5+ years at senior management level is essential.
- Open-cast or underground mining experience is advantageous.
- Master’s Degree (MBA, MPhil, MBL, PhD) is advantageous.
- Certificate of Fitness is essential.
- MHS Act Section 72 competency is essential.
- Professional body registration is preferred.
- Strong leadership, change management, and stakeholder engagement skills.
- Proven ability to design and implement SHE systems, processes, and training programmes.
- Excellent knowledge of SHE legislation, ISO standards, and mining safety requirements.
- Able to foster a safety-first culture while meeting operational objectives.
- Experience in mine closure planning, rehabilitation, and environmental management.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills
