Our client is looking for an experienced and commercially astute Buyer / Category Manager to manage the procurement and promotion of butchery-related products. This is a specialist role requiring solid buying, selling, and trading expertise, particularly within the butchery sector, as well as strong supplier relationships in the Eastern Cape. While a formal background in butchery (e.g., as a blockman) is not required, the ideal candidate will have a sound understanding of butchery items and supermarket operations.
 
The successful candidate will be responsible for driving category growth and profitability through the strategic buying of promotional and replenishment stock. This includes building strong supplier relationships, supporting retail partners, and aligning product ranges with market trends and consumer demand. The role is central to maintaining category performancestock availability, and service excellence across both distribution and retail levels.

Key Responsibilities

  • Negotiate with suppliers to secure competitive pricing and promotional deals
  • Maintain accurate records of all supplier transactions
  • Manage stock levels, product availability, and service levels in line with budget and sales targets
  • Oversee product ranges within assigned butchery categories
  • Drive sales growth through strategic promotions and product innovation
  • Monitor consumer and market trends to inform buying decisions
  • Support advertising and promotional activities
  • Build strong working relationships with Butchery Managers and Store Owners
  • Ensure profitability for both the Distribution Centre (DC) and retail outlets

Candidate Profile

Qualifications & Experience:
  • National Senior Certificate (Matric) – Required
  • Diploma or Degree in Marketing, Purchasing, or Commerce – Recommended
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in the butchery or meat industry – Essential
  • Prior FMCG buying experience – Essential
Skills & Knowledge:
  • Strong negotiation and communication skills
  • Deep understanding of butchery product ranges and supplier networks
  • Knowledge of buying systems and procurement processes
  • Analytical and financially literate
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office; SAP experience is an advantage
  • Hands-on approach with a strong sense of initiative and creativity
